Duodecimo brown Victorian blindstamped cloth gilt "Tracts 1876" to spine (worn to tips) Tracts numbered & individually paginated but seemingly one owner rather than a publisher's collection. The first set of 50 are all 4 pages with the imprint of the Religious Tract Society to the foot of the last page. The starred set are either 8 or 12 pages. 1034 & 1036 are both longer memoirs of 24 pages of Father Oberlin and Countess Matilda and the final bunch are 8 or 12 pages, all with Religious Tract Society imprint to end. Many of the tracts have a neat month and 1876 date in a Victorian handwriting to the top margin of the first page of each tract. The tracts were sold in unbound 100's for distribution in churches, Sunday schools etc. and those to do with reformation of drunkards pressed on patrons of pubs and inns, passed out to families by Lady visitors among the sick or needy. Several are on drink and drunkeness for distribution by tavern missionaries, others for women, still others for young men not confident enough to go against their peers, etc. A single owner collection who has made a handwritten index on the rear endpapers.
